Murray River
Victoria
Forming the border with NSW, the Murray flows 2750
kilometres from its source high in the Snowy Mountains
across Victoria, through South Australia to empty into the
Southern Ocean at Lake Alexandrina, near Adelaide.
From Lake Hume through thriving river towns it flows; Albury
on the border, Echuca, Euston and Swan Hill; Mildura and
Wentworth and on to South Australia. Through rich farmlands
and thirsty deserts; red gums and citrus trees; sandy
beaches and sheer riverbanks; massive old wharfs and slim
riverboat piers; trellised fields and salt flats; past
billabongs and lakes it brings life to a dry land.
Ride a paddle steamer or a camel, hire a pushbike or a
houseboat, fish the river or sail on it, tour a vineyard or
a stately home, take a safari or a romantic dinner cruise,
see the Alcheringa, the dancing Spanish stallions at Mildura
or the old soldiers settlement at Broken Creek, taste the
wine at Robinvale and the cheese at Strathmerton - but do
it!
