 Tennant
Creek -
Northern Territory
A comfortable days drive south of Katherine where the Barkly
Highway from Queensland meets the Stuart Highway from
Adelaide; Tennant Creek is known for the 'Three Ways
Roadhouse'. It is a regional centre for the Barkly
Tablelands and the vast Aboriginal Land Trust areas. To the
east lies Mt Isa in Queensland and Alice Springs is a
similar distance south.
Dating back to goldrush days it boasts a stone telegraph
station built in 1872 and being situated on the Stuart
Highway means it has good service facilities and
accommodation.
Prospect for gold or visit the telegraph station and
Recreation Lake; see the Devils Pebbles before taking the
tour south to see the Devils Marbles, a natural sculpture of
huge round, delicately balanced boulders.
