Outback Queensland
Head west into the setting sun along the Warrego Highway from the Darling Downs - or the Capricorn Hwy. from Rockhampton, or the Flinders from Townsville – and you’re going ‘outback’, beyond the ‘Black Stump’, into the ‘bush’.

Remember though, that the outback, although beautiful, is a harsh place which can lull you, take you unawares – so be prepared.

Inspect the ‘Tree of Knowledge’ in Barcaldine; shear a sheep in Longreach, the birthplace of QANTAS, or visit the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton. Drink billy tea, taste a ‘damper’, listen to bush poetry, stay at an outback station.

Visit the ‘Outback at Isa’ centre at Mt Isa, take a ‘Hard Time Mines’ excursion – that’s underground and a great experience – go on an ‘Outback Park’ trail or see the ‘Fossil Centre’. Fish the Gulf of Carpentaria at Burketown or Karumba (beware the crocodiles), see the wetlands at Normanton.

So much to do, so little time.
